Supreme Court Lays Foundation for Legal Sports Gambling Outside of Nevada

Today the United States Supreme Court ruled 6-3 in favor of the state of New Jersey in a case regarding the “Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act” which was passed by Congress in 1992. The Act was unusual as it did not ban sports gambling nationwide, but rather stated that States were not allowed to permit it. Justice Alito wrote for the majority when he stated that “A more direct affront to state sovereignty is not easy to imagine.” It is now just a matter of time before other states follow New Jersey’s path and fight for their right to legalize, as well as regulate and tax, sports gambling within their states.
